Stress can affect your weight in a number of ways. It can:

  • Increase your appetite and decrease your dietary control
  • Increase the stress hormones, making you more likely to gain weight, especially around the middle
  • Reduce your endorphins, or the 'happiness hormones', making you more likely to turn to comfort foods to help make you feel better
  • Make it more difficult to make good choices about the frequency and type of exercise in which you participate
  • Interfere with your sleep and lack of sleep may affect your hormone balance and your metabolism
