I have always struggled with my weight, no matter what I ate, ever since puberty. Along with a polycystic ovarian cyst, a year ago I was at my heaviest at 86kg. I was not happy with myself and hated what I saw. As a carer I work odd and long hours which makes it challenging to eat regularly. I chose to eat quick and easy meals which tended to be unhealthy. Like many women, I was feeling frustrated and depressed, and also not worthy of being in a relationship – what guy wants to be with a whale? I did manage to lose over 10kgs on my own, but unfortunately had a car accident and put a few kilos back on. Even though I was going to a gym and following a strict diet (denying myself food), I had plateaued. I had bouts of self-sabotaging, more frustration, depression and anger. I was in Gem Designs, buying a swimsuit, and entered a competition for Healthy Inspirations which prompted me to get started. In the last 17 weeks I have lost, on average, close to 700g per week (over 11kgs) relatively easily with no starving and no depriving. For me it really is simply sticking with the journal and how we follow the serving sizes and ratio of protein, carbs, fruit, vegetables, dairy & fats plus exercising including strength work.
One of my biggest challenges is not being swayed by people to eat. I do this by standing true to my goals and seeing myself as a thinner and happier person. I visualise myself at goal weight and being determined to reach that goal and don’t look at dinners out and other social events as challenges. Sometimes I will even bring my own food along, in case the food isn’t quite on plan, as reaching my goal is paramount to increasing my self esteem.
My biggest tips are:
1) Planning and having on-plan food (that tastes good) at home and with me to work or out
2) Increased planned exercise – I have tried the small group personal training sessions, have joined
the City to Bay running group & do Zumba in the centre!
3) Booking me time in my diary
4) Use your journal to plan ahead and keep on track, I use the graph at the front each week to track
and visualise my progress
5) Write a goal statement that means something to you and read it every day to keep on track
My advice to other ladies struggling with their own weight loss goals would be to Live Your Dream! Don’t dream your life, but live your dream. I do this by:
Dream – you must have a dream. Dream big and dream well. Consider all the possibilities & don’t limit yourself.
Vision – solidify your dream into a vision. Write it down, make it real, keep track of it and be specific.
Believe – in your vision. Believe in yourself. Let this belief be a driving force in you – let it ignite a passion in you to strive. Believe even in amongst failure or fear of failure. You will fail or stumble, but embrace those times by learning from them and use it to push you to move on. Remember real failure is if you don’t try.
Action Plan – plan your action, act on your plans. It helps you keep on track and stay focused. This lights your way to living your dream.
The question is not whether you can dream big and dream well, but whether you have the courage to act your dream – the courage to live your dream.
Losing weight has changed my life as for a number of years I never thought I was good enough or fit enough to get into the health and fitness industry. Now I am thinner and happier! I am basking in compliments and amazements. This has encouraged me to enrol at Regency TAFE where I will study a Certificate 3 in Fitness with the long term goal of working part-time in the industry. I look forward to helping and inspiring other people struggling with their weight and fitness.

Over the last 10 years my weight seemed to have increased and I was not exercising as much as I used to. I thought maybe it was age 60 and that is how it was to be. I felt unfit and really did not like the way I looked. I used clothing to distract from my weight. I was about 73kg and to go for 30-60 minute walks seemed very difficult.
In 2010 we were planning to travel to Europe for 5 weeks. Although I wanted to lose weight before we left, I only lost a couple of kilos. In Europe the food was great and meeting relatives was wonderful. I could see that my slacks were expanding to the limit. Arriving home I weighed myself and to my horror I had reached my peak of 80kg. For me this was bad. I suffered from lower back pains, along with pains also in my knees and feet. Walking was even more difficult and so was the uncomfortable feeling around my waist.
Upon return from Europe, I reduced my intake of food, but still loved cakes etc. I had come down to 75kg. We had now planned to go on a 2 week cruise in 2011 and having had been on a cruise years ago, I knew I would put on weight again. I went to Jem Designs for new bathers and happened to see a flyer for Healthy Inspirations on their counter and took one. As my daughter and I had to lose some weight, I thought this might be the way to go. Pondering over what I was going to do for the next 2 weeks, I thought I would come and see for myself what Healthy Inspirations was all about.
In March 2011, I made an appointment to see one of the girls and felt really inspired and both my daughter and I decided to join. I loved the circuit exercise, this I was able to do without a problem and yes I would be happy to go on the weight loss food plan. The girls were very inspiring and encouraging and my daughter and I encouraged each other. Our goal was to reach a certain weight by the time we were due for our cruise in May.
The cruise was wonderful and so was the food. I thought I was limiting myself, but maybe not. I did gain 3kg to my horror, but all was not lost. Upon our return, I went back on track with the eating plan, exercise and good encouragement and in less than 4 weeks I lost those 3 kilos and more, achieving my goal weight of 68kgs. I moved onto the Healthy Balance part of the program and in a few weeks dropped a little more, even with the extra carbs I could now have. Currently I am 66kg and maybe this is my happy weight. To think that from 80kg in September 2010 to 66kg in August 2011 has been achieved, I find that wonderful.
My lower back pain, knees and feet pain are gone. My muscles are really toned I can walk a lot better, and I have this lovely shape and feel great. I have had lovely comments from friends and family. Even some of the clothes that I have held onto for 20 years fit. Amazing!!
When I have coffee with friends I take my Healthy Inspirations protein bars with me, or indulge in healthier foods when eating out. I am very active now and feel wonderful.
My Top 3 Healthy Inspiration tips are:
1. Set a goal and even if the weight comes off slowly, stick to it, you will get there.
2. Stick to the plan, these foods are healthier for us.
3. Keep up with the exercise 3 times a week or more it is better for our health.
Thank you to the girls at Healthy Inspirations for your encouragement, you do a wonderful job.

The Swinging Sixties
As I reached the Swinging 60s and took a long look at myself, I realised the 50’s had been very unkind to me regarding my weight. I decided I did not like the way I looked as I had put on a lot of weight over the previous 10 years and my control over what I was eating, plus self-confidence was diminishing. I’m the manager of a very busy radiography practice so time is always very precious, but at this point I decided to do something about it.
I saw a Healthy Inspirations advert in the local paper and a little voice in my head said “Go girl, this is the time, this is for you. Go now and do something about it.”
I decided to register for the exercise program only, as I thought the weight would just fall off, but alas, no, after 2 months, my body started to tone and I felt good but there was no weight loss.
I had another look at myself and the weight loss program seemed the way to go. I commenced this and thought “I don’t think I can do this.” I had to re-educate myself on food and it would be all too hard.
Many a time I nearly gave up in frustration, but my determination was stronger and with the constant help, advice and follow-up each week, it started to pay off. I then found when weight loss started; I became motivated, focused and found a sense of achievement. The excitement when I reached my goal - I will never forget. Everyone including staff joined in the happiness of my success.
Of course there is a lot of fun along the way with all the hard work – friendships are made, coffee morning, dance classes and of course the famous massage chair which we all love I am sure and with the help from the exceptional staff that care. They share your dreams, your upsets, and your continued questioning for guidance to stay focused on diet relating to a healthy life.
I now have a lifestyle of a healthy diet, combined with regular exercise; I am now able to manage a Healthy and Inspirational lifestyle in my 60’s and beyond.
Thank you so much Nola, Kate and team for running that advert and most of all for your continued help and support. If it wasn’t for you guys, I wouldn’t be here now talking about my “goal achievement”.

Lost 12.3kgs and 42cms
I’ve had a problem with my weight all my life, and suffered at school from the teasing and a bad self-image. I started dieting at age 19 for a wedding, and for all the years since, I would see-saw; put on weight, diet, put on weight, diet. I even had two wardrobes - “fat” clothes and “thin” clothes to accommodate the changes. It’s a horrible word “diet”, and I used to put on the weight, knowing I’d have to do something about it eventually and just kept putting it off.
I’d recently retired and had been on a three-month trip to visit my family in the UK, a very self-indulgent and enjoyable time, but I came home feeling bloated and ashamed of the larger clothes I’d had to buy while I was there. It took a year of procrastination and driving past the new Healthy Inspirations at Prospect every day on the way home from work before I dared to venture in and ask what it was all about. I had been exercising so I was familiar with circuits, but it just wasn’t enough to keep the weight off.
I was welcomed in and the programme was explained to me, but it took another two months of just doing circuits before I finally gave in and admitted to myself that I needed to lose weight – again. I wasn’t pressured, I just saw other women weighing in and being happy about losing weight, a little at a time, and being recognised for that.
The staff at Healthy Inspirations are incredibly supportive and understanding, having been through the weight loss experience themselves. I’ve never been made to feel a failure when the weight went up instead of down, just encouraged and supported. And when small goals were achieved, there were “warm fuzzies” and celebrations. I also liked being able to set my own goals, as it gave me back my power and added to my self-esteem when they were achieved.
And, I discovered that exercise can be FUN!
My three top Healthy Inspirations tips are:-
1. Keep focused on the big picture. There’s potency in visualising what you want to look like.
2. Make your goal statement strong, and read it every day.
3. Don’t sweat the small stuff. If you fall over, just keep going, one step at a time.
I feel very proud of myself, and have loads more energy and a feeling of wellbeing. It took six months for me to lose my 12.3 kg’s, and I haven’t got a craving for chocolate any more! I now like what I see in the mirror and actually look forward to coming into the centre, especially to my “dancing” classes. I hate walking for the sake of it, so I find coming in and doing circuits in good company much easier now.
So, thanks girls, I now enjoy my healthy lifestyle and actually enjoy exercising!

Describe how you felt before you came to Healthy Inspirations:
fat and sluggish.
What prompted your decision to lose weight?
My stomach was sitting on my legs and I was not fitting into my clothes. Plus I couldn’t buy the types of clothes I wanted, like dresses. When it was my son’s wedding in Thailand last year, I had a lot of trouble buying an outfit. I bought a dress before I left and when we arrived I decided to go to a tailor to get something else made. I wore the one that the tailor made, but I was still unhappy with it as it showed all my rolls. There was also a photo taken of myself, my two daughters and daughter in law who was pregnant at the time and we all looked pregnant.
Why now?
Just getting bigger, I had had enough.
Was there a light bulb moment that made you decide “It’s Time”?
The night before I decided to come in I was just sitting there and I didn’t like how I felt with my stomach sitting on my legs!
How do you feel now, in comparison to before you started?
Great, I’ve always been top heavy, but now I don’t even have a stomach anymore!
What do you enjoy doing now, that you didn’t before?
Buying clothes – new tops and trousers. This year I want to wear dresses again and look forward to wearing them in summer.
Have you any tips that you’d like to share with other members?
On my plan reducing the starchy carbs worked well for me. I didn’t miss giving up my lollies plus walking daily really helped. I filled up on a lot of veggies and also found that following an eating plan and exercising at the same time worked well for me. When I use to just exercise on it’s own I only ever maintained my weight and toned up. The encouragement from Healthy Inspirations was also great.
How do you feel the Healthy Inspirations Program has helped you?
It has changed my way of eating and exercising. I’m now very hungry in the morning and really want my breakfast. It has also helped my family - my husband is following the same eating plan and has lost 8kgs and one of my daughters has joined the program and has lost close to 10kgs.
What has made the most difference to you losing the weight?
Not having the pains in my legs because I always thought that was due to the medication I was on, for high cholesterol, but since I have lost the weight I don’t have the pain in my ankles and calves anymore. I used to wake up nightly from the pain in my legs and now I don’t!
Lina R.
I believe I put on weight as result of stress from work. As a teacher my work life is very cyclical with end of terms becoming gradually busier. In September by the end of Term 3 I was the heaviest I have ever been. I tended to eat a small breakfast and lunch and then ‘pig out’ when I got home with coffee, a muesli bar, and then some chips pre-dinner with a glass of wine while I am cooking. Once my clothes started getting too tight I was worried about it and could see a never ending cycle continuing.
My weight wasn’t affecting work and relationships - I thought. However my husband has gradually become very fit with cycling. Which meant he didn’t walk with me as often. My self esteem was fine but clearly I was buying layered clothing to hide the tummy etc. What was most obvious was that my ‘above waist’ body was fatter. I am used to always having heavier legs and bottom – family genes. But my top half was always smaller. Last year I sustained a long term injury to my left shoulder and therefore stopped weight bearing exercises. This eventuated in being flabby all over especially my arms!!
The Healthy Inspirations program has been a very positive experience. Initially I thought I might starve but it has been gradual and manageable. It also makes good common sense mainly. I missed some dairy foods because I was used to lots of yoghurt, milk etc which is an important part of my bone density at this age (55). I also missed pasta and rice which is so integral to being an Italian. However, it’s certainly been bearable.
Losing weight does mean I am more confident with the way I look. Exercising regularly has helped with stress but this will be challenged once the 2011 school year gets going as it will be one of much change. That is why I am pleased to be continuing with the HI program as the girls will guide me and encourage me through the difficult times. They are friendly, professional and encouraging. I think that the Prospect centre is really organised and helpful. I love the fact that I can walk there and meet new women and old friends in my local community.

Lost 12.3kgs and 45.5cms
I was thin most of my early life actually too thin at one stage and put the weight on quite quickly after my last two children were born. I did have some success losing a little weight before an overseas trip in 2004, but not as much as I would have liked and I didn't keep it off. Of course I always 'intended to do something about it' but have no idea why I left it so long. A lot of time was wasted being unhappy with the way I looked and felt.
In my family there are 6 inspirational sisters and 2 inspirational sisters in law - 4 of my sisters, my sisters in law and at least one niece have been involved with Healthy Inspirations Prospect and Frewville in Adelaide.
They began shrinking before my eyes so I thought I would give it a go. The actual turning point was not just the way I looked and felt but I had started snoring and had a sleep study done. The doctor that examined the results said the first thing I could look at to help the problem was weight loss. Since loosing the weight I have completely stopped snoring. I have a much happier husband not only because he likes the new thinner me but he now gets some sleep! We also have an annual girl’s weekend with my mother, sisters and sisters in law. It is always great fun. Due to numbers we are often in share accommodation and I am now one of the girls that anyone is happy to share with because I don't snore!
The weight loss and exercise has improved many areas of my life (this sounds a bit like an ad) but I do cope with lots of activities now that would previously have left me breathless and exhausted as I was so unfit.
The eating plan, education re: food, and support at Healthy Inspirations made the weight loss very doable. I would like to thank all the staff involved for their support, encouragement and humour when I had all those things to enter into my file in RED PEN!
I have had lots of positive comments from friends, family, work colleagues, my children's friends just about everyone that knows me. I am amazed how much attention weight loss receives. All genuinely pleased and some really keen to know how it was done and wanting to do something about their own situation.
A few bonuses would be the clothes shopping - now so much fun, before the weight loss I would try a lot of things on and often left with nothing but a bad mood. I have met some really interesting lovely women of all ages at the centre and I do love using that massage chair at the end of a session.

Lost 9kgs and 52cms

Over a year and a half a go, I made a decision to improve my health based on many factors: I was overweight; I felt miserable with my physical self; I felt I wasn't going to be able to keep up with my children or model healthy body image to my daughters; I discovered I had early stages of arthritis in my hips. The decision to start the program at Healthy Inspirations came after a couple of comments from people about my weight which really jolted me. I also came to the realisation that I weighed the same as when I was 7 months pregnant - with twins!!! My eating habits were healthy but excessive, and my drinking habits definitely did NOT come anywhere near the recommended standards! I honestly believed that this was all part of getting a bit older (45) and accepting that a few kilos were par for the course. On top of all those factors, I am a (happily) busy working Mum of three amazing children, working as a teacher 4 days a week which provides many moments of joy and stress. I knew what I had to do to lose a few kilos and get fit....but EVERY time I tried, I would sabotage my own efforts and end up in semi resignation. I felt that all other areas of my life were so structured and disciplined, so why should I have to give up wine, exercise heaps and watch everything I eat?
I kept driving past the display board outside Healthy Inspirations showing how many kilos members had lost...I drove up to the centre.....told myself just do it......and from the very first moment knew that I had made the right decision. I am a true sceptic of hype and gimmick, so it was a huge relief to simply find people who really wanted to help me achieve a goal which was determined by me. I knew that above all, I needed to be made accountable for following the plan of this goal, so the regular visits, chats and weigh-ins were definitely what kept me on track.
Because I didn't have a huge amount of weight to lose, I knew it would be a gradual and slow process. It was very difficult changing my drinking patterns. I now have set AFD's (alcohol free days) which I can control. It has also been very difficult in social gatherings. To me food is so communal - part of the sharing of your experiences with others. So, I made sure wiser options were on the nibbles plate, and absolutely barred some foods in exchange for a drink. I actually found I had some willpower and determination! I also thought I would suffer cutting out most of the carbs from my diet. What a revelation! I not only felt instantly better, my stomach deflated and I slept better. I do not miss piles of pasta, bread, rice and potato - instead I will have the odd sushi, slice of homemade pizza - and know that it won't make me suddenly pile on 10 kilos! I can NOT undo in one day what took me more than 6 months to achieve.
I also realised how sensitive I was to blood sugar levels. By not eating 5 times a day, I was starving my body and brain, which resulted in messages of "feed me, NOW, savoury carbs, lots of them"! So, the high protein snacks, plus more fruit and vegetables has balanced out my system where I no longer get cravings. I also drink a lot more water now which is purely a habit I had to develop. As for the exercise - I am not manic about it. I go twice a week for a circuit work out, I walk once a week, I ride my bike once a week and I go to a Yoga class once a week. However, this has enabled me to become a much bigger participant in my children's lives as they are all very active. Tennis, swimming, cycling, cricket....I used to just sit back and watch but now I am quietly saying "come on, keep up with me".
It took me 6 months to lose my weight, and I shook my head almost in disbelief and said "b....hell" you did it! I am still amazed every day that I made it happen, and it wasn't that hard. I have nothing but praise and admiration for the staff who have guided me in the right direction, being so professional yet so down to earth. I sleep better, I am less stressed about small things, I definitely look better and I am putting my needs first (no one has complained about this yet!). I have received many comments which both delight and embarrass me! I DO feel I can now control my own health needs for food, drink and exercise, but also acknowledge that this is a life long decision and I will need to be honest and proactive about how I maintain my new habits.
My top tips relating to my journey would include:
- Go to bed earlier, get up earlier
- Eat the two protein snacks during the day (take them to work, portion them beforehand, and have them very available)
- Make yourself do more exercise, even if you don't feel like it - it feels SO good afterwards
- Choose only a couple of close people to talk about how you are going (my sister was a lifeline)
- Take one week at a time, look for small successes and be patient
- Listen to the staff at HI!!! All their advice, encouragement and support guided me to each new step in the journey
- Challenge yourself! This is one area where we girls tend to sacrifice our goals because we are too busy helping our kids achieve theirs, or having to be the best we can be at work. Your challenge to yourself surely should be more important!!
TODAY …. December 2010
A year after reaching my goal weight, I am delighted that I made it through winter without too much of a struggle. At times I felt a creeping sensation that I was undoing all my hard work, I wasn’t exercising enough, I was eating too many comfort winter carbs. But in reality, I had built in to my psyche a new way of eating and thinking about food that saw me through. I kept up with my exercise program of visits to the gym and regular walking, and never a day went by that I didn’t remind myself that I preferred being like me now, not a year and a half ago!
So, as I come in to my second Christmas challenge, I need to think ahead a little to anticipate what this means for a happy healthy holiday season. I get to spend my entire holidays with my children because I am a teacher, so my number one priority is about being physically active and energetic with my family, and DOING lots of things. Some of my goals and ideas for Christmas and summer are:
- Stay active, exercise early in the day when it is cooler - it is like having money in the bank!
- Eat more fish and more fresh salads
- Enjoy the Christmas parties, but remind yourself that you can not do this over and over without some negative body weight feedback (offer to be the driver at a party, you will get home safely and prevent too many Chrissy drinks)
- Keep up with the snacks, your body is used to regular fuel and will respond positively to the delicate balance you have set up
- Enjoy being around your favourite people
- Enjoy fine food and wine – don’t eat or drink rubbish
- Enjoy the energy you have been given by the choices you have to make every day

12 months ago I decided that 'THAT WAS IT'. I suppose you could say that was my moment.
I had just spent the weekend with friends, camping on the river. It was one of the last weekends of warmish weather. After being a spectator for most of the summer I was prompted to 'have a go'. I decided on the tube, as this required less effort than the other options. So after hanging on for what seemed like an eternity (I was determined not to fall off) and having to pull my friend back on a couple of times, I was exhausted. Much to my horror the next morning I had to pretty much roll out of bed and was aching all over. I spent that day muttering to myself how fat and unfit I was but at the same time admitted to myself that I had to do something about it and stop making excuses.
After being involved in sport most of my life I realised that over the last couple of years I had been doing less and less. I went from playing netball 3 or 4 times a week and also going to the gym twice a week to walking 5 times a week. I thought I was doing enough and as a result really didn't think too much about what I was eating. Despite what I thought was a reasonable amount of exercise every year I was gaining a couple more kilos. I knew things needed to change but with now working full time and housework, kids and a fairly active social life I just couldn't fit it all in. At the same time we had just demolished our house and were rebuilding. Goodie I thought I now had another excuse to not exercise. I even blamed my walking partner for my weight gain - she had moved and we could no longer go for our regular walks. I remember telling her it's your fault you know that I've put on weight! I also told myself tomorrow I'll walk but tomorrow came and went. I made the occasional attempt to get motivated. It would last a couple of days and then I would find some weak excuse and stop again. All of a sudden I had put on 10 kilos and was feeling ugly and very annoyed with myself.
I had to change.
Healthy Inspirations is on my way to work so I had been driving past for a while and noticed the signs. Everyday I thought mmm... those kilos, I wonder what that's about? So after my little 'moment' I thought I'd call in and find out what it was all about. But even before I got there I was avoiding it. I started driving a different way to work, telling myself you can do this Karen you don't need help. So then I did a deal with myself. I thought if I walked every morning and could eat well for a week I'd be ok, but if not I'd go and find out about that sign on Prospect Road. So.....one week later I walked into Healthy Inspirations!
That decision not only changed my body but also my attitude and outlook on life.
The staff are so supportive and I actually look forward to going. It is just part of my routine now. At first I thought wow weighing in 3 times a week! How can I get around this but it was exactly what I needed. I needed that structure. I found the whole program easy to follow and called the journal my bible. I loved filling it out and when I didn't I would usually go off track. As I am a last minute kind of person planning ahead was a huge issue for me so I got into the habit of filling out my bible the night before and packing for the next days snacks and lunch. I saw the results immediately and it didn't take long before people started asking me what I was doing to loose weight. I was making the time for me and although I felt guilty my family coped just fine. Nobody starved and it was ok if dinner wasn't ready at 6! They were ok, it was me looking for another excuse. But with loads of people telling me how great I looked I was determined to keep at it. This was one thing I was going to finish!
My how times have changed.
I've now found my voice and feel much better for it. I have found a balance and know I can handle anything that comes my way now. I am not afraid to make decisions or voice my opinion. I have gained a huge amount of confidence since joining Healthy Inspirations. It took me 9 months to get to my goal and I'm very proud of what I have achieved. It wasn't always an easy road, personally this has probably been the most difficult year of my life but with the sensational staff at Healthy Inspirations I always knew they were there for help and guidance. They seemed to know when I needed a kick up the backside or a pat on the back.
I'm so glad I dropped in to find out about that sign and I will be forever grateful to all of them as I am no longer stumbling through life or making excuses!

‘This is not a short story, this is a long story about a journey to find balance’
Growing up I was never the slimmest kid on the block, however I never worried about my weight. When my friends and I were turning 18 we started going out and this made me very self conscious and I started obsessing about my weight. My obsession turned into an eating disorder, I would exercise before and after work and would only eat a small tub of yoghurt and an apple a day. I would make excuses of why I was unable to go out, I told friends I had commitments, but in reality I would be at the gym. At first my parents thought nothing of it, as at times when I did eat with them I would binge eat and if I knew I could not get to the gym I would take laxatives. My family and friends made comments that I looked good, but soon enough family and friends were asking me not to lose any more weight. When I look back at photos from my brother’s wedding I realised I was looking unhealthy. I looked like a lolly pop, big head on a tiny body. I decided to ease off the exercise and food regime. I started putting on weight, however did not know how to stop. The thought of starving again made me want to eat more and I did. I felt hungry all the time! I wanted to find balance with food and exercise but I was too scared to start in case it got out of control again. I changed jobs several times and one day bumped into a friend from my old job who looked amazing, she told about Healthy Inspirations.
I nearly fell over at my first weigh in. I knew I was putting on weight, just not this much! The first week on healthy quick start was a blast! I was excited and motivated! Then came the plan, hmmm how can I cheat this I thought? Surely now that I am going to the gym a few times a week it should be enough? And if I eat as per plan and exercise would I get obsessed and become sick again?? My weigh-ins at the beginning were very up and down. I would go out with friends, eat pies and doughnuts at 5am and then try to make excuses to my Life Style Coach. Till one day I was told ‘you are wasting your time, money and making excuses, you should decide if you want to continue or not’. I could have got offended, however I knew it was a true, honest and most of all a caring comment. So I stuck to the plan (and only occasionally when off it). I lost the weight and I felt fantastic!
My partner and I bought a unit and moved in together. This was a big lifestyle change for me as now I was cooking for him also, where as before I only cooked for myself. My partner does triathlons, therefore his diet is very different to mine. However it was much easier to just eat whatever I cooked for him and just serve up the same portions. We were also busy renovating, instead of going to the gym I told myself it would be ok not to go, as I was doing physical labour all day long. However this was not the case, I soon put on 7 kilos. We then bought a house at Prospect, I knew Healthy Inspirations was opening up in the area and I could not wait! One night when we were picking up a pizza for dinner, we saw the Healthy Inspirations kilos lost board on the side-walk. I said to him ‘I need to go back and take charge of this demon’. He came in with me to re-sign.
I was going to Healthy Inspirations again; however I was only on the exercise program. This was making me feel better however I was still not accountable for what I ate. When my partner proposed to me, I made the final call and decided I needed to go back on the weight loss program. I got back to basics and used the food journal which has helped me find a balance with food and exercise. Having balance is very important to me, as after having an eating disorder my bowel movements have never been the same and are now very sluggish. The diary not only helped me to control what I ate, but to be more aware of my whole physical self. I also no longer worry about cooking separate meals for the two of us, instead my husband eats a larger portion of what I would have on the plan.
When I believe in something I tell everybody about it! My 2 closest friends are members as well as my mum. We all support each other! Healthy Inspirations is now a major part of my life and I plan to keep it this way.

“My journey with Healthy Inspirations”
All my life I have struggled with my weight, joining many weight loss centres and then putting it all back on again plus more.
I am in my sixties and retired and was finding it hard to even walk up the street because of my weight. I was buying size 18 and sometimes size 20 clothes and this really made me unhappy with myself. I have always prided myself in being a positive person but it is hard to be positive about yourself when you are so overweight.
In February of this year I found a flyer in my letter box which has totally changed my life. This flyer was from Healthy Inspirations and was asking people to come and enquire about what they had to offer. So one day I just decided to pop in to the centre and this was the beginning of my new life.
It has been a hard journey, made a little harder by me having to have an operation which stopped me from going to the gym for around 12 weeks but I have never given up.
I didn’t like anything about myself before but I now find myself feeling positive about how I look and this has completely changed my life.I have had to go out and buy all new clothes which is really exciting and I now don’t need to go to the “Big” ladies shop. I am now going to the gym five times a week, enjoying dance on Fridays and doing at least two life sprints each week. The staff have been so supportive and I would like to thank each and every one of them for the continued support and friendship that they have given me.
Top Tips:
1. During your journey if you gain weight, Don’t Give Up. It took me a while to accept the fact that we will all gain at some stage
2. Talk to the other ladies at the gym and find out about their journey and support them as we are all here for the same reasons.
3. Make your meals interesting and make sure you use the expertise of the wonderful girls at the centre if you have any questions regarding the food.

“I have a new enthusiasm for life because I feel so different”
My weight had crept on over the years and my daughter’s wedding was looming in the future. I didn’t want to embarrass myself or my family and photos don’t lie. All records of the occasion were going to be of me hating how I looked in clothes.
I really felt my weight had been holding me back, and affecting my life. I had stopped working partly for health reasons and it was all too easy not to do any physical activities, as I had never been sporty. My self confidence was low, and I was unhappy with myself and others.
Since I’ve got to my goal weight not only do I fit in my mother of the bride dress , but I have a new enthusiasm for life because I feel so different . I have reconnected with old friends and made new friends at the gym, all because I have a new attitude to life. We are making travel plans for the future and I have a lot to look forward to. I have rediscovered pleasure in walking as well.
The only difficulties I had with the program at Healthy Inspirations were self made. Not really liking cooking , I sometimes didn’t plan ahead , so I ended up making poor choices. Also a few friends of mine (who should think about getting healthy and losing weight) are slightly defensive when I talk about my journey which can be uncomfortable.
Losing weight has changed my life. I am so much happier in so many ways. It was time I stood up and said “it is my time and this is what I need to do” and I’ve done that. I’m now learning to say no to temptations and it is “my choice” whether I have them or not.
Top tips:
1. Mentors are wonderful - encouraging and helping to forgive oneself and move forward
2. Talk to other women at the gym and gain inspiration from them
3. Learn to plan: use all the Healthy Inspirations recipes and recipe books to keep menus interesting.

As a nurse I have been educated in a healthy lifestyle of good nutrition and exercise, and constantly see bad choices as reasons for admissions to the vascular ward where I work. The same risk factors appear again and again - high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity - and surgery (while usually a last resort) is occurring more frequently. Also post-operative progress is extended longer and complications can arise if these risks are present.
One of my nursing roles is to provide education on healthy lifestyle choices, but during a period of personal upheaval and sadness around the time I was turning 30 I found I was disregarding my own advice. Being tall I always thought I could carry a bit of extra weight and this weight crept on slowly until I was disgusted to find I was over 80 kgs. I blamed shift work, stresses of life, and even other people but knew I had to take responsibility for my own actions. And I was aware of the hypocrisy of an overweight nurse imparting weight-loss advice...
At this time I was feeling bloated, sluggish and lethargic most of the time – my physical state seemed to match my mental state perfectly. I knew I had to do something to change it all but had tried other weight-loss programs in the past with limited success. And then I found the inspiration I needed - there was another nurse I worked with who had recently lost weight and looked amazing. She was the talk of the ward and told us she had achieved this through Healthy Inspirations. I spoke with her at length about the program and after um-ing and ah-ing for way too long I realised that this was something that was going to be worth the time and money spent. After all, we only have the one body, why not treat it with respect and love.
And since then I have felt fabulous in both body and soul! The results were obvious immediately – I lost 3 kilos in the first 9 days, and all those endorphins rushing around the system helped with the sad head. The exercise combined with good nutrition was the key – this is not simply a diet on its own. And the staff at Prospect have all been so supportive and encouraging plus they know what they are talking about having been through the program themselves. Since losing the weight I feel so full of energy; I never thought being able to fit into jeans from my early 20s would fill me with as much joy as it does! Now I love going to the classes at the centre and seeing familiar faces. I have even started running and I race up the four flights of stairs at work without needing an oxygen mask at the top.
Like any journey there are ups and downs (and not just on the scales) but when I look back on how far I have come, and more importantly, how good I feel, I am so proud of myself. And suddenly everyone on the ward is asking about Healthy Inspirations!

Describe how you felt before you came to Healthy Inspirations:
Probably disgusting, fat and ugly. I didn’t want to go out and see anybody or socialise. I just wanted to stay home. I didn’t have much energy and just felt not good overall. I couldn’t fit into my clothes and the sizes just kept going up.
What prompted your decision to lose weight?
A girlfriend gave me a 7 day pass and I noticed that she looked great, which inspired me to think “I’m going to do it too!” It took me a couple of weeks to come in, but I am so glad I made the decision to start.
Why now?
I kept thinking about my age and how it was becoming more important to keep fit and to start looking after myself a bit more.
Was there a light bulb moment that made you decide “It’s Time”?
Ok, I thought, I’ve got this card, I’m going to come in and do it. And I thought that it really is up to me to do something about how I feel and look.
How do you feel now, in comparison to before you started?
I feel brand new. Like a new lady. My confidence has increased and it is nice to go into a shop and buy off the rack. It feels great when your old clothes start feeling baggy. I’ve had a windcheater I have been wearing for a while now and my husband said “burn it!” I used to be a size 16-18 and now I’m a size 12–14.
I’m probably doing much the same things, but feel more confident doing them. I no longer feel embarrassed. Shopping is much better fun, when you can pick off the rack. I used to go for walks before and ended up feeling exhausted. Now I am walking lots and feeling energetic. At home, everything is easier to do – things like the housework and the gardening.
Have you any tips that you’d like to share with other members?
Having soups and boiled eggs in the fridge so you have things prepared. Putting a goal inside my head of what I’m going to look like when I lose the weight or looking forward to any events that are coming up. I have just found that finding a certain mind-set that makes you do what you need to do and know you have the ability to achieve it.
How do you feel the Healthy Inspirations Program has helped you?
It has inspired me. The girls are fabulous and keep me on track. They help if you’re feeling down or frustrated and they give you great motivation when you need it. They are so friendly and easy to talk to.
What has made the most difference to you losing the weight?
Self love.
And just something I’d like to say:
Coming here and being here for the whole12 months, I found that I felt cooler in the summer with the weight off, but the downside is that without the layer of extra fat in winter – I am FREEZING!
But it is well worth it.
Thanks girls.

Describe how you felt before you came to Healthy Inspirations
Lacking self confidence and had low self esteem and wanted to feel better about myself
Why did you decide you needed to lose weight?
Went to Hawaii last year and looking at the photos I did not recognise myself in my bathers and wondering how this happened? How did it creep up like this? I was basically wearing the same sized clothes but filling them out.
Was there a light bulb moment that made you decide “Its Time”
Hawaii – I thought holy crap that’s not me
How do you feel the Healthy Inspirations Program has helped you in particular?
The program has inspired me, has provided me with good eating habits and portion sizes. It has retrained me on eating correctly and healthily.
Exercising has motivated me to maintain my healthy weight. I thoroughly enjoy the comradery with fellow Healthy Inspirations ladies who are all trying to achieve the same goal in our own personal way.
How do you feel now, in comparison to before you started?
I feel fabulous in my clothes, it is lovely to put something on and that it looks great. The great thing for me is I can do up the arm buttons up on my short sleeved shirts which were getting rather tight. A most embarrassing experience was in MEL airport where I was trying on a top and had the blouse half on and had to call in the sales assistant to pull it off my arms as it was stuck.
What do you enjoy doing now, that you didn’t before?
Wearing hipster jeans and looking forward to wearing bathers in Fiji at Christmas this year.
Have you any tips that you’d like to share with other members?
- It is OK to have some treats or drinks, but you really have to remain disciplined most of the time.
- Keep it personal, don’t tell too many people what you are doing as that can cause failure.
- The journal was a life saver – it kept me goal orientated and is a great tool to refer back to on portions. Writing in the journal daily is imperative to reaching and maintaining your goal. If you don’t write in it, you can easily get off track.
- Not missing a workout or daily visit – I was in 3 times a week
- I looked forward to the wildberry procrunch bars every day as A) I felt like I was eating something a little bit naughty but B) it was aiding in my weight loss
