My continuing journey with Healthy Inspirations.
In October 2010 I entered the Alice Springs Masters Games Walking events.  I was fortunate to return home to Maitland with a Silver medal for the 5km walk and a Silver medal for the 10km walk.  All very unexpected as I had had no coaching.
Now I was ‘bitten’ by the ‘bug’ and decided to look for a Race Walking Coach.  I found a delightful gentleman and we started training in earnest twice weekly at the local athletics field in November 2010, with me continuing my training programme mornings at Healthy Inspirations as well.  My track and distance times improved rapidly.
I entered the Lake Macquarie Masters Games in March 2011 and won a gold medal for the 1500m walk and also a Gold medal for the 3km walk.
I plan to continue along my new found athletic track.
Healthy Inspirations has completely turned my life around.
I am a very fit, happy and most important HEALTHY 61 year old grandmother.
My granddaughter says I am “awesome”.

   LifeSprints Circuit Classes Timetable

LifeSprints is a 20 minute interval training circuit class designed to maximise weight reduction benefits and increase fitness (with the warm up and cool down, the class does take 30 minutes). This workout results in significantly more fat loss than 40 minutes of hard steady exercise. When starting the LifeSprints classes it is important to build the intensity gradually. Some of us have not used our sprinting muscles for decades! Please talk to us first if you have any existing medical conditions. The class is lots of fun and you will feel so good afterwards. Times subject to change without notice.

Carolyn N

Carolyn_Neumann_beforeCarolyn_Neumann_after_shot"I have struggled with my weight for all my life, I have tried every diet program and fad over the last 36 years.  Yes, in the short term I lose weight then I put it straight back on. Because of this struggle I had developed health problems from high blood pressure, arthritis and a slow recovering broken leg.

I had walked past Healthy Inspirations several times and never had the courage to go in.   A friend of mine who had also had weight problems started going to Healthy Inspirations and after a couple of weeks she dropped by and left a saying from Healthy Inspirations ‘If you have the courage to begin, you have the courage to succeed.’  This got me thinking about my life and how unhappy I was with my weight and my looks.  I spoke to my daughter who said she would come along to as she was heading down the exact path I had.

I was very apprehensive as I was very self conscious as I hadn’t worn track pants or for that matter any kind of long pants but also I wasn’t sure how my leg would hold up.

After a couple of weeks of reading the saying that had been given to me we both decided to give it a go. When we joined in September 2008 I weighed 118.3kg which is severely obese for my short statue of 158cm.  Since joining Healthy Inspirations I go to the gym 5 mornings a week and have followed the easy to follow diet program.  Yes, there were times when I wanted to give up, I would do everything right but my weight would stand still, but with the encouragement of my daughter and the wonderful staff at the Centre I hung in there to reach my goal.

I find it so much easier to do the everyday chores even mowing the lawn is a breeze but most importantly I have a lot more energy to get through everyday.  I am now planning new ventures including my first plane flight and cruise overseas.

Fast food use to be my weakness now its what to get out of the freezer after my daughter and I do a cook up of all our favourite Healthy Inspirations recipes.  I have found that using a diary to record what I eat very beneficial as you can’t cheat when writing down what you eat.

My doctor is very pleased with what I have achieved, I have lost 29.2kg and 73.5cm to date but most importantly I am now off my blood pressure tablets plus I feel much better about myself and my looks.  I have people that I haven’t seen in a long time as well as acquaintances from local stores coming up a telling me how well and good I look.  You get a real buzz.

To anyone starting out on their weight loss journey, you need to be true to yourself, write everything down, no matter how small and remember that the wonderful staff at the Centre are there to help."

Wendy W

Wendy_Ward_Before_PhotoWendy_Ward_after"I have been overweight most of my life, from childhood to my early forties. Most of this was due to poor diet, emotional eating, lack of exercise and replacing food with alcohol due to family breakdown and divorce. I had tried many weight programs over the years, but always fell back into my old habits and gradually my weight crept back on.

I was inspired to change due to a history of heart disease, and spending time with my delightful and very energetic grandchildren. Another motivation was when I was at the beach with my hubby who looked around and very diplomatically said, “You’re starting to look like everyone else here!”

I’d walked past Healthy Inspirations many times, but thought I could lose weight on my own. I realised that no, I couldn’t – I needed help and support. The BIGGEST STEP I took was to walk inside; the staff were just fantastic and more than helpful. The girls explained the programme and fitness activities … so my journey began!

I started attending the centre regularly, followed the eating programme and exercised on a regular basis. I reached my goal weight within 4 months, losing just on 7.5kg and 36cms, with new found energy to burn.

Now I feel fantastic! My self esteem has improved and people keep telling me how wonderful I look, and my grandchildren love having an active, fit grandmother. I now know the advantages in following a well-balanced eating plan and regular exercise. I have since learnt to scuba dive, snowboard and I have my own boogie board, which is great fun with my grandchildren. I also competed in the 2010 Masters Games in Alice Springs, winning two silver medals in the 5 and 10km walking events. I can buy clothing off the rack, instead of going to the larger sizes. I have a totally new lifestyle and I LOVE IT!

Healthy Inspirations offers support with a very professional and understanding approach. I cannot praise the staff at the centre enough; they help you through the ‘bad times’ and encourage you on a constant basis. With this support one cannot fail – YOU JUST HAVE TO WANT TO DO IT!"

Kylie R

KylieRafter"There were two things I’d always wanted — to feel beautiful and loved. It took me until my fortieth year to honestly address one of the largest obstacles in my way; my weight.

I’d always struggled with my self-esteem and body image. Growing up, I was shy and lacked confidence, especially in my physical appearance. I loved ballet, but was always cast as a boy for performances. I convinced myself that I was ‘fat, ugly and abnormal’, not a real girl at all. Any beauty I possessed felt so deeply hidden beneath my pudginess, I came to believe no-one would ever find or appreciate it.

Things improved when I became involved in competitive sport in high school, but the positive changes to my figure brought some unpleasant experiences. After I married, I found it safer to retreat to my overweight state. Having four kids provided a good excuse for me to further neglect my weight and health— along with extra kilos, depression and fatigue also came. There were periods when I managed to improve my physical and mental states. I knew the principles of health and nutrition, and also knew my self-esteem recovered when I looked after myself. My problem seemed to be maintaining the momentum, and I’d relapse into bad habits.
Again, I convinced myself I lacked discipline, commitment and worth. When my husband fell in love with someone else and left, I thought I deserved to be miserable and alone. Last year, I finally held myself accountable for my 85.5kg figure.

I listened to all the excuses as to why I couldn’t lose weight:  Lose 20kgs plus – impossible ... why bother, you can’t lose a kilo, let alone twenty ... even if you did, nobody’s going to love you ... it’s too late ... you’re too old...you’ve lost weight before, and now look at you ... you’re lazy ... you just can’t do it!

What I realised is that I couldn’t do it — the way I’d been trying to —alone. For four years I’d been looking at Healthy Inspirations on my daily visits to Pender Place. For four years I’d been making excuses not to investigate their program. I had to admit I needed professional help to take effective action. I could no longer deny I needed to change.

It was a huge challenge for me to commit to joining Healthy Inspirations. My negative voice asked what if I couldn’t do it? What if it was a waste of money? After all, I’d joined gyms before and not lost any weight. After listening to these questions, there was another part of me that answered I needed to try a new approach, and be willing to invest in myself.

When I signed the agreement, I still wondered whether I was capable of taking off a kilo, let alone the target of 20kgs I set with my consultant. After the Healthy Quickstart program, I lost 2kgs – 10 per cent of my overall goal in the first week (twice as much as my negative voice had predicted I was capable of).

With this confidence boost, I found no further excuses to achieving my goals. The team were all genuinely supportive, so even with my struggles and stumbles, I stayed focused. I began feeling the benefits not only of achieving my weight goals, but also of pushing and challenging myself on the circuit, of converting my comfort eating habit into a healthier exercise habit, of being comfortable saying no to things that would hold me back.

I began to love plotting my progress in my journal, charting the physical evidence that I was not only willing, but able to change (when my pants fell down on the circuit one afternoon, I could not longer ignore the fact), that I wasn’t lazy, but actually organised and motivated. I loved being able to choose and wear clothes I felt expressed my true style and taste. I loved that instead of pinching my ‘flobby’ arms, my kids asked me to show them ‘my guns’. I loved collecting the longer pieces of ribbon every month that showed just how many centimetres of change I’d achieved. I also loved being part of a community of women, staff and members alike, who inspired me in their strength and dedication to creating vibrant transformation. I loved setting a positive and responsible example of self-care for my family. If I’m honest, I also loved receiving compliments from people who recognised my process of change, and decided they wanted to do the same for themselves.

Most of all, I started to love and appreciate myself again, not just physically, but also for my strength and determination in recovering the real me I’d concealed under that extra fat. I learned feeling beautiful and loved required internal, as well as outer, change. I’d achieved a larger goal than just shedding weight — I’d regained self-respect, quicker than I ever expected.

I’m so grateful to all the women at Healthy Inspirations, for creating the environment where I began to feel lighter in all respects. Whether it was caring support and advice from the consultants, or the positive role models on the circuit, the encouragement I needed was always there. It’s my hope that by sharing my experience, I can really be the person I’ve always wanted to be, because encouraging any other person to recognise their own potential, to find their courage to change, are the most beautiful, loving gifts I can give."

"I had recently divorced and I decided it was time to re evaluate my life and where I wanted to go from there.  My weight had been gradually increasing until I hit 90kg and was in size 20 clothes.  I needed to get my life back on track.  I now feel fantastic!!! My family and friends say I look 10 years younger which is just so wonderful to hear, I reached my goal of 60kg, so if you put your mind to it you will get there in the end."

"Over the past 10 years my weight had steadily increased to a staggering 100 kilos.  While I was lucky    not to have any diagnosed health issues, I felt unwell, unhealthy, unfit, unhappy and unable to cope  with the always downward spiral my life had become. I now feel confident, energetic, healthy, fit and    happy and I look forward to each new day with optimism and positive feelings about me and my life."
